Happy Half-Way to St. Patrick’s Day, brought to you by the team looking most forward to that day, or just about anything else that means this season is over. In fact, I think these guys have driven Ozzie to get a head start in the dugout.

More views here, here, and here. —Vince

I personally believe the whole Green-In-Baseball campaign is lame. I can maybe, MAYBE, see it being worn on St. Patrick’s Day during Spring Training. Otherwise, I don’t think it belongs on the field. Especially for something as lame as Half-Way to St. Patrick’s Day. What’s next, a Half-Way to Christmas uniform in July?

What’s next, a Half-Way to Christmas uniform in July?

I’m sure it’s been done some place in the minor leagues.

When I consider how many green team hats that are sold during Spring Training and throughout the season, I’m surprised that every team doesn’t do the Half-Way to St. Patrick’s Day promotion.

I was at the White Sox game last night and at their spring training game on St. Pat’s. At spring training, the team wore green caps with their solid black tops, which didn’t look good. The green pinstripes and black batting helmets don’t work either. But it is neat that they acknowledge the South-side Irish.
Is displaying the New Era logo on the cap a no-no?

two things on the green unis.
    1. The ‘Half-way to St. Patrick’s Day’ thing is lame. Totally cheesy, minor league stuff. If you want to wear the green unis, have an ‘Irish Heritage night’. It could be similar to the various latin-american nights around the bigs. In Chicago, where there is a large Irish-American population. it could be huge!
    2. Spend the money and get green undershirts and helmets. The black sleeves under the green trimmed unis looks horrible.

And get fitted 5950’s, for Pete’s sake! Mr. Lukas links to a lovely store at the top of the page that sells them. It’s called Distant Replays.

I think you guys need to lighten up…It’s just for fun, a little quirky, thats all. Everything doesn’t need to be perfect. Sometimes you guys can sound really anal about these things!

I’m the opposite of a Sox fan, but still, I appreciate their saluting the Irish heritage of the city. I actually applaud them for doing so. For goodness sake, this is a formerly Bill Veck-owned team … it’s in their blood to do stuff like this.

Anyone but me notice the “team color specific” MLB logo on the backs on the uniforms are still in black and grey on the green unis, while the Majestic logo was correctly green-washed?

Okay, this is my first post here, but I lurk the comments every day. I love the site, ang get annoyed like everyone else when something is posted 5 times a day. Add to the FAQ as needed.

    A. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wore the odd font numbers on their practice jerseys only.
They are not for regular game use.

    B. The new NFL logo starts NEXT year.

    C. The green dot on an NFL players helmet means there’s a radio in the helmet.

    D. If you think you are posting a new jersey here for the first time; no, you are not 99.999% of the time. Somebody has already beat you to it and we are seeing it for the 100th time. Very seldom is there “Breaking News” here in the Comments.

    E. The home NHL jerseys/sweaters this year will be the dark jersey, not the white one. And NHL teams won’t have a third jersey this year.

    F. For Hispanic Tribute Nights around MLB, the Giants wore uniforms with Gigantes on them. The Mets wore Los Mets on theirs, and the Rangers wore Los Rangers on theirs. The Padres wore camafloge uniforms as a tribute to the military population in San Diego.

    G. The black strip worn by ACC football teams this year is for Virginia Tech.

    H. What was once known as Division I-AA is now The Championship Subdivision.

    I. The Devil Rays will be dropping the “Devil” from the name and the new colors HAVE NOT been officially released yet.

    J. When the Toronto Maple Leafs unveiled their new Reebok uniforms, they also had a player from their AHL affiliate modeling the Toronto Marlies (Marlboroughs) white jersey with the McDonald’s patch. They are owned by the Leafs, and the parent company apparently “bundles” them together for hockey fans.

    K. Numbers are owned and assigned by NASCAR. Teams can request a specific number. No numbers are retired in NASCAR but there are no plans for the #3 (Dale Earnhardt) or the #28 (Davey Allison/Texaco/Robert Yates Racing) to be used.

    L. All the new NHL uniforms have been leaked in NHL 08.

Also, I have no problem with the St. Patties Day in September thing. It’s something that Bill Veeck would do.

Looks like the Flyers don’t like the new jerseys:
    New sweater.

Privately, some of the players said the new jerseys were too snug. So the Flyers are ordering them two sizes larger than usual for most players.

How long has Chicago done this? Did they go whole hog (green beer, other green stuff)?

If they’ve been at it for a while, I’ll chalk it up as a fun quirky tradition, kind of like sausage races in Milwaukee. If it’s something new, it reeks of a novelty cash grab.

Paul (and any other UniWatch readers in the St. Louis area),

I’m going to the Blues FanFest today where they’ll be unveiling the new Blues sweaters. I’ll try to snap some pictures and post them this afternoon. Hopefully they’ll be more Bruins than Islanders…

The Hudson Valley Renegades did a Christmas in July promotion the second week of July. It didn’t go as far as custom uniforms, but it was pretty bad. Especially with the stupid little snowmen they had setup blowing soap bubbles all over the place and into the fried dough oil. Bad news.

Looks like the Iowa State Cyclones are going to wear throwback uniforms today against the Iowa Hawkeyes. They are doing it as a tribute to ISU’s Peach Bowl team of 1977. Even though I am a die hard Hawk fan and currently wearing a Hawkeye jersey, I do say it is an improvement on their current jerseys.

I’m not a White Sox fan, it just shows the organization waving the white flag IMO. Instead of looking forward to March 2008, they could’ve made a uniform for Fall colors.

From Today’s NY Times about Ian Kennedy and Stirrups:

WILL IT START A TREND? Before September, there were no Yankees players who asked to wear stirrups. The only Yankees in uniform who wore them were the coaches Ron Guidry and Don Mattingly, who wore them when they played.

The fashion trend for players is to wear their pants low, showing no socks at all, or to wear their pants high and show solid-colored socks. Stirrups have gone out of style, but Ian Kennedy is bucking the trend.

Kennedy, who joined the Yankees on Sept. 1, wore stirrups at Southern California and encouraged his fellow starters at Class AA Trenton to wear them this summer. As a Yankee, he said he saw no reason to stop.

“It just looks better, I think,” Kennedy said. “I never wear my pants down, ever, in a game. If I’m wearing my pants down, it’s only if I’m in the bench or the bullpen. I just like the look of stirrups, on every level.”

No doubt, Fall is the tops. College Football kicks off, as does the NFL, pennant races heat up in MLB, and the NHL has opened their training camps, the NBA starts too.

OK…aren’t these new Reebok Edge jerseys supposed to be snug?? And then wouldn’t wearing them super huge go totally against the whole reason the NHL went to this type of jersey?

I’m curious to know if the Players Association was totally on board with this whole Edge design change.

And the Flyers probably won’t be the only team to wear them huge.

I think this particular green-ing looks pretty good. they obviously used their standard home pinstripe set (thus the black pinstripes and MLB logo) and just added a green stitch set. It pops nicely, and its a basic design, no matter how dumb the rationale behind it is.

    I’m a life-long Sox fan in Michigan.

They’ve been doing this promotion for 3 years. One could call it a cash grab but the team did not make the green striped uniforms available for purchase on their website until the public demanded it. I believe that the game-worn half-way to St. Patty’s Day uniforms are auctioned off for charity every year.

As far as I can remember, the New Era logo has been on the side all three years, but this is the first year that the caps have been adjustable. That’s just an embarassment. They ruined the whole concept by doing that. Why even bother with the authentic button-up tops at that point? Just get green t-shirts and write the script SOX and names and numbers in magic marker.

The Sox marketing dept is actually quite receptive to fan response and sensitive to looking like a mickey mouse organization since they have club on the north side that can take the field wearing tutu’s every night and still pack the joint with frat boys and yuppies.

I would like to believe that this snafu was the fault of the supplier and not of the equipment manager or marketing dept. We’ve heard stories of New Era screwing up before so I wouldn’t put it past them.

    No doubt about it.

Why is pitt wearing gold trim on their shoulders on their white jerseys? You can’t hardly see it, even on close up shots.

Mississippi State is wearing its white pants with the white jerseys after wearing maroon pants the last two weeks. Unlike most college teams, the Bulldogs have high white socks that go all the way to the pants. The socks have two maroon stripes at the top. Nice socks, but they probably could use more stripes on them to offset all the white.

I don’t know what to think of those apron strings. They are dumb, but I kind of like the way they are incorporated into the shoulder design. They seem less “randomly thrown on there,” if you get my drift.

The Padres made the World Series in 1998. The official reason they announced at the game for wearing 1997 was because it was the last season Tony Gwynn won a batting title.

It was not a Tony Gwynn tribute, but the third of three decade-themed nights this season. 1970s night was in May against the Cardinals, and 1980s night was in June against the Red Sox.

I appreciate the Padres putting on throwback nights like this every year. They’ve had at least one every season since moving into Petco Park in 2004.

The Yucs have been selling those jerseys for a while, but have failed to wear them.

I’m also a Sox fan. I know the Sox used to wear green BP jerseys and hats on St. Patricks day as far back as the early 90’s. I don’t remember seeing green versions of the 80’s uniforms, so I don’t know how far back they’ve worn green on St. Pats. When did the Reds and Phillies do it? Those jerseys live on in replica-land.
I went to the HWTSPD game last year, and no, they didn’t have green beer. I brought my nephew, and we were both expecting to receive adjustable green hats (promotional giveaway). At the gate I was told that he had to be a certain age (12 or 18, I don’t remember) to qualify for the giveaway. I bring a KID (I think he was 8 – obviously I’m age impaired) to a major league baseball game – one where they’re giving away 10.000 free green hats – and they won’t give them to KIDS! As a country, where did we go wrong…
Regarding last nights game – Jim Thome did not wear his green socks – he had knee-high black ones. I’m surprised there was no photo. (I looked, couldn’t find one to link.)

The Minnesota-Florida Atlantic game is not on TV today- but the radio team had some time to kill before kickoff (the officials at Dolphin Stadium apparently couldn’t find the first-down chains!) so they chatted a bit about what they called a new look for the Gophers- white jersey with maroon numbers outlined in gold, and solid maroon pants. One of the announcers described the pants as “almost pewter”. This could be tough to find with no TV, but it sounds interesting.

Essentially the blue pinstripe jersey remained unchanged from its inception in 1991 through the early 2000s (aside from various shoulder patches). In 1999, the Padres introduced the white jersey with no pinstripes and no orange as a second alternate jersey (the local papers here hated them because they thought they looked like Dodgers south in them). Dressed to the Nines shows this jersey starting in 2002, which was probably the year it replaced the blue pinstripe as the offial home jersey. It was definitely around before then though, because it’s easy to find pictures of Gwynn (who retired in 2001) wearing it.

Beginning in the late 1990’s, Padres starting pitchers were given the choice of what jersey they wanted to wear (pinstripe, solid blue, or all white) and barely any of them chose to go with the blue pinstripes. Eventually, the blue pinstripe was just gone. I’ve always wondered what was the last date the Padres wore the blue pinstripes (aside from last night of course).

Those green white sox unis are awesome, every team should do that, but not call it half way to st patrick’s day.

There have been a few like that: The Rams had a gold alternate, the Packers had a yellow alternate, the Dolphins had a navy alternate. None of them have ever been worn in a game.

If the promotional green caps weren’t given to kids, it’s because they had a beer company sponsorship logo on them.
Yes, Elena G, you’re right – there was a Miller Lite logo on the side of the green cap. Too bad, though.

Yeah Max, I guess they have had this “alternate” for quite some time but it has never and probably will never be worn.

The Sox marketing dept is actually quite receptive to fan response and sensitive to looking like a mickey mouse organization since they have club on the north side that can take the field wearing tutu’s every night and still pack the joint with frat boys and yuppies.

A White Sox fan. Rare. White Sox fans are so jealous of anything to do with the Cubs. It never stops. The Cubs have never done anything as dumb or tasteless as “Half Way to St. Patrick’s Day”. But I guess the Sox marketing dept. figures by creating lame promotions it will appeal to all six thousand of their lame fans.
This idea is as silly as starting White Sox games at 7:11 to tie into that classy convenience store. Get it 7/11? Sox fans can count on 7/11 to be open 24 hours a day so they can loaded anytime of a $3 bottle of Boone’s Farm Wine. Haha. Go Cubbies!

The NFL calls it “merchandising”. These jerseys are never intended to be worn as an on field authentic jersey.

Coach link was wearing a standard, no-cut-off-sleeves crewneck sweatshirt during the game today. Could’ve gone a bit more link, like his assistants, and like he did in previous games though.

The throwbacks were link to say the least. Next year’s NEW uniforms will be very similar to the throwbacks, except the gold will be more of a USC gold than an Old Gold. The helmets will also be white and have a new link…the “I State” logo in the middle was selected. So bottom line…starting in 2008 the Iowa State football uniforms will look like link

When I was watching the USC v Nebraska I noticed that the trainers and coaches are wearing black shoes with white laces (just like the players).

This is the only place I could think of where I can share a “discovery” like that and not get made fun of…

Could be another tribute to Mario Danelo, the kicker who died in the offseason.

Oh, and ISU hasn’t announced officially which helmet design they’ve chosen, I think you are referring to the informal Des Moines Register poll taken of a group of fans tailgating for one of the games. The responses were along the lines of “We like the Block I, but we’d really like to see the team win some games”.

    The Bluebonnet?

The Bluebonnet sticker is a tribute to the late former First Lady, Ladybird Johnson. Mrs. Johnson was responsible for the creation of a highway beautifucation program in Texas that included planting billions of bluebonnets along interstate highways.

I don’t think so. I know the players at SC have worn black shoes and white laces for quite a while. I think the staff are just being part of the team by doing it. I think its cool.

All of those jerseys are replicas. The so-called ‘Premier’ jerseys. I received my Predators authentic today and did a side by side comparison with the premier. There is a HUGE difference.

Here’s a link with some shots of the Norfolk State disasters. Like Oregon’s but if Oregon went back to the ’50s. By the way, I went to the Oregon game today. The tire treads are even worse in person because the sun blends them together so it looks like they have white squares on the shoulders

If only there was someone in the NHL who saw what the original 6 had done and tried to replicate it. The “kitchen apron” uni’s are too similar to the new NFL uni’s…. instead of trying to be ahead of the times, we need to stop, slow down, take a breath, and realize that the classics were never meant to die

1st up, the Buckeyes O-Linemen do wear knee braces, what was the point of that post? Not to be mean, I just don’t know what you were asking.
2nd, the USC team is wearing a helmet decal with a set of feild goal posts and that kid’s number and/or a football going through them. I can’t recall right now, as I am about half tanked.
3rd, Texas wears a state picture on their helmets, and every time they beat another team from the state, a color dot is added to locate that school. I don’t think it is a logo, but it’s atleast colored.
4th, I loved the ISU throw backs. very nice.

Uhh…there was no joke made about the I-35W bridge collapse BECAUSE THE DECAL IS NOT A TRIBUTE TO THE BRIDGE TRAGEDY.

The raft comment was in reference to the Gophers losing to Florida Freaking Atlantic yesterday.

    Wow…

What does everyone think of the crowd @ college football games wearing the same color. Yesterday @ the Gators game the majority of the crowd wore blue to counter the Tenn. Orange and I thought it looked cool and probabl intimidating for the players. I know NBA Teams have done it too.

When done right it can give a team a 3 point lead before they even step on the field/court. Really, the only way to screw it up is to do a Pinkout (This actually happened at my old high school). Any color can work, but I think blue, red, white and black are the most effective.

I was at that game too, and the reason for the 18 age limit was probably the Miller Lite advert on the back of the cap.
