Blame Canada MLB

Canada Flag.jpg

Yesterday was July 1st, which is traditionally celebrated as Canada Day up north. I’m told that from a strict statutory standpoint, this year’s version of the holiday is today, because July 1st fell on a Sunday. Doesn’t really matter from a uni-related standpoint, because the Blue Jays were on the road yesterday and are also on the road today, which means they won’t be wearing their special Canada Day uniforms for the home crowd.

What’s up with that? Couldn’t MLB have scheduled the one Canadian team to be playing at home for the country’s biggest holiday? And this isn’t a one-time thing — a quick schedule check reveals that the Jays were on the road on July 1st in 2005, 2004, and 2003. Then again, some of the Jays’ Canada Day designs have been decidedly better than others, as seen in these designs from 1997 (front, back), 1998, 2000 (front, back), 2001 (front, back), 2002, and 2006, so maybe it’s for the best.

Meanwhile, it turns out that some Canadian minor league teams wear special Canada Day jerseys too, as seen in this shot of the Ottawa Lynx. Check out the kid with the little flag — love that.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Did you know there was a World Cup of American Football? I didn’t, until Jeremy Brahm sent me these photos of what the Japanese team will be wearing. … Anyone else notice that the Giants’ Rod Beck memorial sleeve patch looks a lot like a Uni Watch membership card? … Vince Grzegorek stumbled upon a photo of Georgia College’s baseball team, which uses what has got to be the biggest name typography ever. … Ramon Castro was the victim of a multi-layer cap prank on Friday. More photos, and a short but priceless video clip, here. … Speaking of Mets-related pranks, someone appears to have hung a pink “I’m Gay” T-shirt (with Nike logo creep!) in David Wright’s locker. … The Indianapolis Star‘s web site has a great photo gallery covering 60-some years’ worth of Indiana all-state hoops teams. Lots of awesome photos — well worth clicking through. The full gallery (which was brought to my attention by Kenneth Adkins) is here. … Nice Negro Leagues throwback game yesterday in K.C., with the Royals dressing up as the Kansas City Monarchs and the White Sox honoring the Chicago American Giants. The Royals/Monarchs had a “42” sleeve patch for Jackie Robinson and a “22” cap inscription for Buck O’Neil, plus the Royals coaching staff all wore uni No. 22. … Jonathan Carone reports that Presbyterian College (DII, moving up to Division I this year) has just unveiled new football uniforms, as seen here, here, here, and here. Assuming you can get past the team name (yes, they’re really called the Blue Hose, which should be reason enough to root for them), it’s particularly odd that their white and colored jerseys are based on completely different templates. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: According to a paragraph buried in the middle of this column, at one point this season Ichiro actually asked now-departed Mariners skipper Mike Hargrove to wear a real jersey instead of a smock/pullover thingie. That is just too cool for words.

Holiday Schedule: Things will run as usual around here this week, except for Wednesday, when we’ll have an open thread. Plus I’ll have a doozy of an ESPN column on Thursday. OK? OK.

Yeah, don’t count on the MLB to care about baseball north. Before last year (as you alluded to), there were at least 3 years of Canada Day games south of the border.

As a sidebar, do you remember where the Toronto gathering is going to happen?
As a sidebar, do you remember where the Toronto gathering is going to happen?
Yes (thanks for reminding me about this): It’ll be upstairs at the link, on July 24th.

I’ll announce the St. Louis plans tomorrow.

Regarding Canada Day, yes, it would be nice for the MLB to schedule the Jays home but would it be THAT hard for there to be some sort of recognition at whatever city Toronto may be in that day. Would there be a reason that there couldn’t be a Canada Day road uni designed for the occasion? Obviously not every US team can host the fourth, but they usually all wear American flags on their caps.

Didn’t the Blue Jays and Expos play on Canada Day in Puerto Rico one year? If I recall, Ontario native Shawn Hill pitched for Montréal that day.

Can’t the Blue Jays simply request to be home on Canada Day and get it? It seems like I read somewhere that teams that can submit such requests, and that they are usually honored if at all possible.

Man, that 2006 Canada Day jersey is hideous. I really miss the blue jay head/baseball/maple leaf logo.

I can’t see why an exception couldn’t be made for the Jays to always be at home. Boston is always home on Patriots’ Day – same day as the Marathon. Unless it is that much easier to schedule the Red Sox to be home on the 3rd Monday in April than it is scheduling the Jays to be home on July 1.

Anybody see the logo on Morgan Pressel’s shirt in the women’s US Open yesterday? I couldn’t quite make out the logo. Perhaps making it bigger would have helped.

    link

In 1998 for Canada Day, the Jays wore a white vest with a red undershirt. Same lettering style as 1997. I’ll see if I can find a picture to post.

From the Chicago Tribune, in regards to the Negro League uniforms the White Sox and Royals wore yesterday:

“The Sox and Royals were allowed to keep the Negro league jerseys they wore Sunday if they made a $500 donation.”

Is there a Team USA in the World Cup of American Football or would that just be too unfair? I’ve always loved the idea of a worldwide football event, but didn’t think there was enough worldwide interest in the sport. I’d love to see the U.S.A. send it’s best college players to probably dominate this thing.

Couldn’t we send out High School All-Americans? They’d probably clean up.

I was at the Ottawa Lynx game yesterday and those are the same jerseys they have been wearing throughout the season…not anything special for Canada day.

two quickies.. first off as ridiculous as it was for the blue jays to be away on Canada Day, it is equally embarrassing that many MLB teams have Memorial Day off, and a couple of years ago (2005 to be precise) teams actually had INDEPENDENCE Day off! so much for tradition.

secondly, with all the uni abominations going around the majors these past few seasons it is incredible the white sox negro league uni was so simple, so classy. in my opinion it blows away many current unis in MLB.

Speaking of Independence day, stay tuned for some pics of the always-awesome red, white, and blue A’s uniforms. They’re playing the Jays that day, too, I think it’ll be interesting to see how well “O, Canada” goes over with the crowd.

The earlier Canada Day jerseys from the mid-1990s, before they made the lettering thicker and multi-colored, looked great. Does anyone have any pictures of those? The numbers are white with a thin cut-out strip running through them, just like the regular home jerseys used to be.

Speaking of that number font, is it just my imagination, or did they link? The proportions of that “7” seem to be back to the old style.

American football in Japan: it’s a huge sport at the college-club and industrial level. A guy I know (5’7″, 130!) played wide receiver for the “Silver Stars” club that went to the Rice Bowl in the late 1990s. Uniform-wise, Japanese American football teams are very big on having the link, where a player name would usually go. I’d say that more than half the football teams I see use this.

The pink t-shirt with the “I’m gay” markered on is just re-diculous. Would those morons be chortling about any other group (blacks, Irish, the “physically challenged”, whatever)? I guess when you get a bunch of boys in their 20s together, stupidity invariably ensues.

A World Cup of “our” Football is something I’ve always thought would be a great thing. I didn’t realize there was one.

Could you IMAGINE the offensive line that the Japanese could field, with all those sumo wrestlers!? lol. Talk about a punishing ground game!!!

I thought it would be a great way to spread the game internationally…would think the NFL would love that idea. US could only send college players…run it in July, just prior to the opening of NFL camps, get us football junkies through the dregs of summer! :-)

I know if there’s anyone out there with the answer, they’d be here. I need to get some Japanese baseball stuff for my brother-in-law’s birthday gift, can anyone suggest a merchant on-line who has a good reputation and a good sized selection?

Here is the photo of the link:

I also liked the 1996 Canada Day jerseys. They were a red version of the style that they wore in their championship years.

Here is the website for the USA football team. Great pics of Pop Warner uniforms in there as well if you hunt around.

    link

No idea if this can be found anywhere, but I seem to remember that they also wore a special Canada day cap as well. I think I even purchased one back in the day.

So these are fake stirrups, I get that, but still, it looks better than having them wear pajama pants.

The US is sending a team for the first time this year. The team is made up of a bunch of nobody NCAA players. I handn’t heard of any of them.

Wow – I hadn’t realized GettyImages had their own line of Golf Sportswear. That *is* nasty creepage.

sweden’s team wears a bunch of different helmets. they have a logo with giant viking horns, and one with the “3 crown” logo, but the game footage shows everyone wearing something different. here’s the video link:

Korea’s logo has the ying/yang thing on a white helmet, but it looks like the national team unis are light blue, similar to Carolina, and similar to their World Baseball Classic duds. Scroll the headline photos for shots of the powder blues.

AJ, the Yakyu Shop will sell you all kinds of things:

…though the prices aren’t cheap because they have to ship the stuff halfway across the world.

I highly recommend the unnumbered replica jerseys, since they’re cheap ($30 or less!) and are designed for fans to wear them to games. Official game jerseys, OTOH, can cost $200 or more!

I was watching the Minnesota high school football all-star game this weekend. They play it in the summer for some reason.

All the players brought their own helmets, nothing new for an all-star game, but the players all traded helmet logo stickers resulting in what you see link. It’s quite ugly, but I can see how it’s a bit of a keep sake for the kids.

While a NASCAR driver’s jet is usually some play on the driver’s number and initials (you can request tail numbers from the FAA like you can with license plates from the DMV), the interesting thing is indeed the font. To have the 8 be a different font than the other letters, even more so.

A couple things about the KC Monarchs unis the Royals wore yesterday:

    1) According to mlb.com, Jackie Robinson didn’t wear #42 with the Monarchs:

“After his one season in the Negro American League, on the appropriate date of October 23 — he had worn uniform No. 23 as the Monarchs shortstop — Robinson and, though buried by history, teammate pitcher John Wright both were signed into Organized Baseball by Branch Rickey.”

However, I found link pic of Robinson which looks like he wore #5

    2) I haven’t been able to find any evidence that the Monarchs ever wore uniforms that looked lke that. Furthermore, as shown in the Robinson pic above and link they didn’t wear it when he played for them (also offers further evidence of his wearing #5). link is the closest uniform I could find.

    Hey, Paul

I got a note for your prototype investigation This may sound silly but in the 1995 version of Madden NFL Football you could enter a secret code to unlock the Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars even though they were one year away from being actual teams. The producers of the game gave both teams 99 overall ratings. I remeber this well bacause the Jags team you could unlock had a crazy helmet design and uniform that the team did not use, but the Panthers uniforms were right. Finding evidence of this is really going to be a bitch bacause you would need a Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo version of Madden ’95 and you need to find the secret code. I will try to find a screen grab put its gonna be hard.

For the same reason the White Sox wear black I’m guessing. My feeling is, if you have a color in your name, that should be your primary color, seems simple. One exception is the Blackhawks, their red jerseys are so much better than their alternate black one. The Red Sox in green once in a while is OK to me as it’s paying homage to the locals, but I stress only once in a while – like twice a year tops.

Red Wings wear red – Check
Red Sox wear red – Check
Blackhawks wear red – tradition and their black jersys arent as nice, they tried though
White Sox wear black – huh?
Blue Jays wear black – huh?
Redskins wear a shade of red – Check
The Blackhakws do have a lot of link though. So at least they are somewhat faithful with the shorts and striping on the socks. Also the helmets and gloves are black. And I’m all for a “Bring back the Blue to the Jays” campaign. Hopefully they’ll do that with the rumoured new jersey that I heard about here.
One nice thing is that every bird team (Orioles, Cardinals, Blue Hens, etc) that I can think of in any sport remains faithful to the color of that bird…except the Blue Jays. True, there is some blue in the uniform, but it’s such a small amount. Plus, when was the last time you saw an actual blue jay with a significant amount of black on it? Here’s to a uni change for the Jays…
It may just be me, but I see quite a bit of black in link.

I agree thats its quite offensive and inappropriate for that phrase, meaning etc to be used, however on the other hand, they are in their locker room, their “sanctuary” so to say. I’m sure no one expected that to be broadcast on the nightly news, espn etc etc. Now, I’d like to think that those responsible for such an act would feel bad that it got into the media, but just using the phrase to being with makes me doubt that. FYI, I use that phrase and i have no objections, problems etc etc with homosexuals or any other sexual orientation. Simply uttering the phrase doesn’t make one a homophobe. I might also mention, that ther aren’t too many college degrees on the mets.. or any tema for that matter, and college, I found is where the most enlightening(is that the right tense?) happens.

On Last Comic Standing this week there was a funny bit by one person talking about homophobia. To sum up his bit, the comic said if we treated people with other phobias the way we treat homophobes it would be some what amusing – say a person who scared to fly, telling them they have to accept flying for what it is and accept it reguardless of their fears. For American Football World Cup, they have qualifying games against teams in their region, just like in the soccer world cup.

However, with football helmets being relatively expensive for a semi-pro or amatuer sport (for many of these players), when the teams compete in their qualifying tournaments, they will wear their “team” helmet with the national team uniform, so you get some funky looks.

As for the Japanese baseball uniforms, even XL are like Medium to Large for us. If you are big guy it may not fit. Japan has still not figured out that some people are naturally larger than others.

The main reason for no US participation was that there was not a national organization for American football, each organization, NFL, NCAA, NAIA, high schools, each felt that this was their own feifdom and did not want work together. Now with USA Football, we have a national organization and we can rightfully show the international teams, how football is played. Should the US games be blowouts, probably, but if they do not take it seriously, they will get awaken very quickly.

Not quite – McGlaughlin was an officer in the US Army Blackhawk Division during WWI. OF course that name does derive from Chief Blackhawk, and the red jerseys very likely from the now un-PC reference to the skin color of native Americans.

    ______

    A bit better:
Major McLaughlin chose the name Blackhawks for his team. There are a couple of different stories about why he chose that name. The first one says that during World War I, McLaughlin had served as commander of the 333rd Machine-Gun Battalion of the 85th (Blackhawk) division of the U.S. Army. The division’s nickname commemorated Black Hawk, a prominent Indian of the early 1800’s, so McLaughlin chose the Blackhawks for the team’s name in honor of his military unit. The second story says that the Major had a restaurant in Chicago called The Blackhawk and he named the team the Blackhawks to get a little free advertising for his restaurant. There’s probably a little truth to both stories.

What makes it okay to use “gay” as an insult? Because people do it therefore it’s okay? Slavery; it was done by people, was it okay? At the time, their argument was the same as your. Pathetic.

Oh jesus, can we all just shut up already. This is so ridiculous. Like you’re are all saints and have never used an insult that wasn’t politically correct.

    *spelling corrected…it was bothering me
I don’t know if this was mentioned on here already, and I missed it. Since the NHL is getting all new jerseys, Is the AHL doing the same?
They are following the lead of the NHL, and will have new jerseys in the same design template as the NHL.

Question for the legion of experts out there:

In doing some research, I found an unsubstantiated claim that Penn was the first college football team to wear uniform numbers regularly, in 1913. Upon further research, I actually found photographic evidence dating them back to 1911 (but definitely not earlier).

All my Google might couldn’t bring up anything definitive on the history of college football uni numbers – does anyone know if this is the earliest instance of their use?

Using “gay” as an insult = wrong.

Many of us have done it anyway = yes.

Which actually makes it worse, because doing something that you KNOW is wrong, and doing it anyway, is particularly pathetic = definitely.

Looks to me like they are trying to emulate the white and black of Real Madrid, and a flair of yellow to call it thier own. If you watch the games lately, the Galaxy predominatley wear the whites, and the yellows have been ditched for the most part. Looks like the green will be completely phased out. Actually that kind of looks like black. I think it’s just some sort of camera trick that makes it look gray. The underbill looks like it matches the color of the logo. Other shots of him in that style of hat shows the black underbill.

Sure, the names chosen could have been better…(I was never a fan of singular names. Heat, Lightning, Magic. Team names should be plural. Or end in S…or X). Like I said, it just strikes me as a little weak to adopt that style of team name.

Like the earlier post (#138) the guy mentioned Celtic. That’s THEIR way of naming a team. Boston Celtics is our way. Not saying one is better than the other. Just what we’re used to…the established format State-side, you know?

Boston (NBA) – (just plain) Celtic
Texas (MLB) and New York (NHL) (just plain) Rangers
NOTE: The new “Rangers” will have a feud with the new “Celtic” called the “New Firm” even though they’re all in different sports
Kansas City (MLB) – Real K.C.
    Sacramento (NBA) – Real Sacramento
    Washington (MLB) – Nacional

    Any others?
LOL!

I’ve always found it hilarious that the only Spurs supporter in the NBA (Steve Nash) has spent his career as a rival of the S.A. Spurs

and if you get into team nicknames, you can have teams like New Jersey Red Devils and St. Louis Blues (oh wait!)

except that the New Firm already exists – it’s Aberdeen and Dundee United.
Yeah, but the U.S. has no problem co-opting rivalry names, witness the branding of the L.A. Galaxy – Chivas USA matchup as “Superclasico”, as if Boca-River didn’t exist.

Isn’t Nash trying to buy a share of Spurs? (Tottenham, not San Antonio). Also, his bro played for Canada in the Gold Cup.

New Mariners skipper John McLaren has a small “c” on the back of his jersey. No pictures yet.

why the hell do people get so bent out of shape over Yankee and Red Sox jerseys with names on the back? they’re REPLICAS!!!! They aren’t the real thing. You go online right now and buy a 2 or 13 it says Jeter and Rodriguez. You buy authentic it doesn’t. ALL the Majestic replicas have the names on them. Just deal with it

I can understand if the replica jersey is made of a cheaper fabric or the cut maybe isn’t the same, but this is a fundamental inaccuracy. Just because its a replica doesn’t meant that it should be wrong on purpose.

I question more the people that buy these things. I can’t see why anyone would even want one.

I’m guessing it comes more from people buying what they can afford more than anything. If they want to show support for their team but can’t afford an authentic, a replica is their only choice.

    link
That will be the finest jersey in the MLS… the only competition will be from DC United who I think has a very classic look. The change of crest as well as colors in delightful, its a shame they used a template though.
I don’t know…I liked the green and gold color scheme better….that new jersey looks boring to me. Same ol’ Adidas template…zzzzzz
Looks to me like they are trying to emulate the white and black of Real Madrid, and a flair of yellow to call it thier own. If you watch the games lately, the Galaxy predominatley wear the whites, and the yellows have been ditched for the most part. Looks like the green will be completely phased out. Alexi Lalas (destroying US Soccer on and off the field in whatever way he can) has been quoted as wanted to emulation the Galacticos, as Real Madrid are known. Lame.
I’m not sure whats lame about that… moving away from the JOKE of a league we were seen as with names like mutiny, fusion, rapids? Whats wrong with taking a page out of the classics and trying to look more respectable? The prior galaxy jerseys looked like intramural ultimate frisbee jerseys from wesleyan or something. These look far more respectable and less vomit inducing. And in case you havent noticed, most MLS teams that have made uni switches (im not counting NY because their a corporate soccer advertisement) have gone to more classic soccer look. I just dont see te bad in it.
I should note, I didnt just mean team names, but also jerseys, color schemes etc.
Just seems a bit poser-ish to have a Real Salt Lake or FC Dallas or Chivas USA…that’s the Euro way of naming teams. Chicago Fire, Columbus Crew…that’s how teams are named in the US. City…name. Not Name…City. I would think that would inspire less respect from across the pond. “look at the yanks…copying our names. Wankers.”

Now the DC United works. I realize that is’ a rip on Manchester United…but that one, of all the others, works the best.

Just seems like the little brother trying to copy the big brother, to me.
DC United is not taken from Manchester United. There’s a large number of teams out there with ‘United’ in their name. DC United stole from that, actually United usually signifies the merger of two or more clubs, Manchester United isn’t from a merger they just took it because they liked it.

As to LA’s uniforms, it’s good. It’s clean, and non-gimicky. Basically, White and blue with gold trim. Yes, it’s a template, but every major team in soccer is using templates because adidas and Nike aren’t going to stop the mills from cranking out tens of thousands of shirts that are sold as replicas or uniforms (for schools, clubs, adult leagues, etc)so one team can look different.

I like the new Galaxy crest…looks sharp.

The debate will never end between “Euro-names” and “American names” for MLS…I see both sides.

I did want to comment on the replica jerseys with names when there are not supposed to be names. I think it’s a matter of not vested fans (certainly not Uni-Watch readers) kind of wanting to “show off” the players that they’re fans of. Certainly a casual baseball fan probably won’t recognize say a #20 Red Sox jersey as Kevin Youkilis.

I just saw on TV some jackass in the crowd at Yankee Stadium wearing a #15 jersey with MUNSON on the back. WHY?!?

Did you like Ray Allen throwing out the first pitch at Fenway in an ALLEN 20 home jersey? (Sorry I can’t find a picture.)

I always thought replica was to be made as close to the real thing as possible. While it is cheaper, shouldn’t they still follow the basic principles of the jersey?

Maybe i’ll be standing by myself on this one, but i LIKE oregon states’s new uniforms! u want to talk about ugly, look no further than the “U”

I’m not sure if it was mentioned and I doubt that anyone will read this anyway seeing as how it’s late, but New Era sells both a low profile and a high profile hat for MLB teams on their website and it appeared as if Clemens was wearing a low profile on the mound today.
Using “gay” as an insult = wrong.

Many of us have done it anyway = yes.

Which actually makes it worse, because doing something that you KNOW is wrong, and doing it anyway, is particularly pathetic = definitely.

“Not as ugly as Oregon” Good uniform.

OSU’s unis would be fine, except for the link.

Sometimes I think college teams try too hard to be “innovative”, without thinking about why something hasn’t been done before.

Let’s try this again… “Not as ugly as Oregon” <> Good uniform.

Just sat in the left field bleachers at the Padres/Marlins game with my old school teal Marlins cap on….got to just stare at Jose Cruz’s stir-ups for two hours….nice.

    I’ll try for pictures tomorrow.

My friend and a die-hard Yankees fan (I know, I was surprised, too) eloquently shared his belief that “that only reason a real fan should own a yankees jersey with a name on the back is if it was a gift from an important female in his life who just didn’t know better.”
