It was a veritable Uni Watch summit meeting last night in Minneapolis, as comments section stalwarts Minna H. and Teebz (who drove all the way from Winnipeg!), along with about a dozen others, made the scene at the wonderful Nye’s Polonaise Room. Full details to follow next week. See you tonight in Chicago!

i’m paraphrasing here, but Dreamboat said something on Sports Center today during the Pirates/Braves hightlights to the effect of:
“Pirates.. those are terrible uniforms. What are you going to park cars after the game?”

Does anyone like the Pirates red alts?

The Pirates shouldn’t be wearing red. It just looks stupid. But hell, what do I know?

It was so cool to put a face to the names of Minna and Teebz. I love reading their comments. :)

Can’t wait to see the rest of the pics next week!

Watching the highlights on TV this morning, I gotta say that the Padres jerseys didn’t look as bad as i thought. Yellow pants, though, need to stay back in 1972.

Gotta make it the norm, baby!
Looks like a giant Gulden’s Mustard ad.

Ugh. Teebz looks fine, but I knew there was a reason I don’t like having my pic taken. What does everyone think of MY jersey? I was abstractly representing the All Blacks.

bud, I like the Pirates’ alternate reds, but I can understand not wanting them to because it’s not part of their color scheme. Just like I actually like the Mets’ black alternates (surprise, surprise), but I support the Ditch the B**** campaign because the Mets don’t look right in black. However, if the Twins got a black alternate, I wouldn’t complain.

Last night was a blast! There were around fifteen Uni-Watchers and friends, and many great jerseys. I couldn’t believe that many people made it, but I am a pessimist by nature, so I thought it would be Paul, me and Teebz. Paul is even better in person than on paper, and Teebz is a hoot!

TD, glad you could stop in, and tell your wife I really enjoyed meeting her.

To everyone else (Hugo, Jeff, Trevor, Jim, Adam, Meade, guy with Detroit hat, never got the name, and mom, and anyone else I missed–sorry), glad to meet some fellow Uni-Watchers, and please post more. We need better Twin Cities’ representation.

PS; It’s uni-related ’cause I never saw that lame UTAH on the side of the shorts before- but check out this shot. baron Davis mashing his elbom into this guy’s face just prior to a monster windmill Jorden-esque dunk. There’s a poster right there.
    link

P.S. Those of us still at Nye’s when the highlights were playing on ESPN had to stop and watch the Padres in their Dijon unis. I don’t know about the others, but I liked them. Which is odd because I don’t like yellow. I think the Padres should wear them more often.

Hm. Maybe Utah should just stamp it on their asses and be done with it. I agree–it looks silly.

I love the Padres unis, too bad they beat the Cards though….but I’m not sure I agree with the idea of them wearing those uniforms more often. They’re throwbacks, and wearing them more regularly would take away some of the “novelty” of it all.
I love the Padres unis, too bad they beat the Cards though….but I’m not sure I agree with the idea of them wearing those uniforms more often. They’re throwbacks, and wearing them more regularly would take away some of the “novelty” of it all.
Yes, that’s true. I think it was because of the shock of it that I enjoyed them so much. Also, they were wearing the stirrups, which always help. Ok. You convinced me. They should keep them as throwbacks.

Oh! My beer quest–I tried a Polish beer last night. It sucked. Teebz can back me up on this. I will stick to my usual tipple after this.

The Padres need to somehow play Pittsburgh when the Pirates are also wearing their 70s banana uniforms.

Last night I’m watching the Cards/Padres game at my parent’s house and my mom comes in and makes a remark about the brightness of the Padres unis. She then paused for a moment and asked me why the players weren’t wearing STIRUPS and said they all looked like they were wearing pajama pants. I truely am lucky this coming mothers day.

Watching the padre-cards game last night two things came to mind… first off, the yellow pants were tough to look at, but even worse when worn pajama-style. at least the brown stirrups broke up the bottoms a little…

secondly, the striping on the cardinal collar and elastic belt were identical to the classic stirrup striping… what a shame no-one on the squad was showing last night!! shame, shame… once again.

Im still trying to figure out why the Padres wore pants with belts last night, and the Cards wore true 70’s double knit throwbacks.

Darn, I was really hoping Minna was going to wear purple. I wanted to see if Paul would make good on his threat. :)

Just to keep it uni-related … can you really see Roberto Clemente going out there in one of those … red … THINGS the Pirates are wearing? I know this isn’t the Pirates’ first foray into loud unis, but stuff like link seems downright tasteful in comparison.

On the late career cameo appearance, Will Clark playing for St. Louis was left off. Just thought i’d comment.
On the late career cameo appearance, Will Clark playing for St. Louis was left off. Just thought i’d comment.
So was Willie Mays with the Mets. :)

Aside from the red alts, I think the Pirates are in the running for best uniforms in the NL.

Great to put the faces to the legendary names. Sorry I couldn’t swing by last night, I ended up working pretty late.

The Pads need to keep the yellow because my link went deep twice!

But how in the world did his helmet get so link so fast?

Wow pretty cool to put names on faces. I wish I could make it to the Chicago one tonight, but alas… Anyways, those mustard unis looked pretty cool, but I would hate for them to ditch the blue and tan they go with now.

To pile on, great to put some faces with names.

Teebz, you have brave foolhardiness (can’t tell which) to be fotoed in that sweater. I like it myself, but then I don’t mind sticking out a bit in this crowd.

Minna, your jersey is fine. All-Blacks? I didn’t know we talked much about rugby here. (Then again, I get banged up enough playing volleyball.)

Uni Note-Re the Cameo column. I really, really miss the ice-cream white and sky blue of the Montreal Expos, overdone sidestipes and all. (Buck You, Fud. And Marlins’ fans? Don’t say you weren’t warned about Jeffrey Loria.) When they went to pinstripes/home and grey/away in ’91-ish, they looked just like manybody else.

In regards to the cameo article-I find it something amusing that you don’t consider Gretzky’s stint with the Rangers a “Cameo”.
    East Coast Bias?
link

Gotta make it the norm, baby!
The colors yes, that uniform…no. The blandness of the current unis is more of “San Diego club” rather than “Padres club”.

That’d be his time with St. Louis.

If the Buccos insist on using red in an alternate uniform, I think they should just wear their regular home vests with red undershirts and red caps.
If the Buccos insist on using red in an alternate uniform, I think they should just wear their regular home vests with red undershirts and red caps.
I hope you mean the red-billed caps, and not some all-red thing.

That Icelanders shirt made me bring up those Fishsticks I had for lunch! God, what were they thinking back then?
FYI. Today’s Mets/Brewers game in that bucolic Flushing construction zone .. snow white unis, and the REAL Mets cap – Blue.

Minna, we had a great time. Thanks to everyone. I didn’t really get names aside from Paul, Minna, and Teebz, but it was fun to share a little group therapy amongst the similarly obsessed for once. Even Melanie had a good time.

Paul, thanks for taking the obsession on the road for us, and I hope you got a peek at the Xcel lobby one way or another. The various sites list 181 jerseys representing all the boys and girls teams in the state, but I couldn’t find any images with this hamster-driven hotel wifi.

Last night I was at a friend’s place and the local sports report was on. I was in the middle of telling some story, and I happened to see a clip of Juan Encarnacion (who is on rehab assignment with Springfield’s AA Cardinals) crossing a base in pajama pants. I stopped mid-sentence and said (almost yelled) to the TV, “JUAN ENCARNACION, just because you played in St. Louis doesn’t mean you don’t have to wear your pants high!!!” My friend just looked at me and kind of laughed uncomfortably, then I had to explain about high pants and everything.

Anyway, I can’t believe I didn’t notice Encarnacion wasn’t showing his stirrups when I went to a game a few weeks ago, but I was too distracted by Cory Rauschenberger, I guess. I think we’ve talked before about Chris Carpenter wearing his pants low when he was in Memphis, but Juan Encarnacion isn’t exactly Chris Carpenter. (not that Carp should be able to get away with it, either, but you know… he’s Carp.)

OK, I just had to share my moment of uni-related indignance (“outrage” seems too strong of a word) and the resulting awkwardness from last night with people who Get Itâ„¢.

Don’t know if this has been posted already, but the KC Wizards of the MLS will be wearing special Lamar Hunt tribute kits tonight vs. FC Dallas. Here is the link

I will be at the game and try to get some pictures of them in action, don’t know if my camera is good enough though.

“This guy” just any scrub, it’s Andrei Kirilenko. But yes, vertical script on pant/shorts legs is just wrong. (And yes, I’m talking to you U of Oregon.)

The Cards pants might have been more accurate, but the ‘birds on the bat’ logo on the jersey was the current version, not the vintage logo. Really sad to see them put so much energy into these throwback nights, and then fall short on something that simple.

I haven’t seen any pictures of the Cards hitting (or not hitting, as I saw in the box score). Did they wear the red helmets, or did the scimp there too and just pack the navy ones?

I like the vertical lettering on the shorts. The link in the 70’s did it as did the Baltimore Bullets (sorry, no good pics).

After a crappy week with no internet service, I surf on over to UniWatch and see some happy, long-awaited faces! I didn’t even need the caption – you must look like you comment (and, no, I have no idea what that means). Rock on.

What, Minna, no glittery décolletage? :P I guess the beer in your hand makes up for it. And, because not many others on this board will likely notice, I have to mention that those are some killer earrings.

Teebz, I see you were rocking the Evil Fisherman. Well done.

I am very bummed that I no longer live in the middle of the U.S., as I would have been at that party with bells on (maybe even literally).

I didn’t notice it in the comments yesterday about cameos, but Chuck Foreman wearing #22 for the Patriots was thrilling to me as an 11-year-old New Englander.

Amazingly enough, I couldn’t find a picture on the Interweb. Go figure.

I asked a friend of mine who plays D-1 baseball at Gardner Webb about the pants/stirrups situation and he said high pants just didn’t happen for them. They did go high pants when they were in a slump, however.

Luckily they wore the link helmets. And I don’t notice much link in the ‘link‘ logos…except perhaps that the current version is bigger? And they wore link tops, bonus points for getting that correct.

Shane Victorino is pretty clearly wearing a mic sticking out of his shirt right at about letter-level. Not sure how thats working as he head-firsted into 2b on a steal early in the game. I dont have a picture though…

Really great to see the infamous Teebz and Minna.
I agree, the Jazz uni’s last night sure do link. Not only are they an odd color babu blue. They use the old-west slanted Jazz font across the front that is just lame. The Utah on the leg is just ridiculous. To be honest I don’t think the Jazz have have ever had a great looking uni. The current link and link aren’t bad, but they aren’t great either. Just average in my opinion. And on Baron Davis – that dunk was one of three big highlight reel plays he made last night. He was amazing.

I noticed that as well…I knew players wore mics but its usually on the back of the neck of some other inconspicuous place. And I think you meant “slid head first” hahaha, but it’s okay it’s a Saturday.

And can someone tell me why the Phillies manager is wearing a stopwatch? Is that a common thing that he does?

    Hey all,
I’m just wondering if anyone knows and good places to get alternate/promotional jerseys. Namely I’m talking about the Milwaukee Brewers “Cerveceros” jersey. I can’t find it anywhere. If anyone knows any good places that’d be killer.

They might be clocking the time between the pitcher releasing and the catcher catching the ball. It’s often used to determine which batteries are easier to steal off of.

While typing this, I look up and see Reggie Willits is rocking a lapel mic too. I’m guessing Fox has one player one each team doing it.

Anyone notice the Gary Carter link on the ESPN uniwatch page showed him wearing a single flap helmet. He always wore the no flap version from what I remember!

    link

Was watching the Texas Tech/Oklahoma softball game this afternoon at the gym and noticed a couple things.

    1. Oklahoma seemed to have merit decals on the back of their batting helmets.

    2. Texas Tech had all black unis…jersey, pants socks, and shoes. It looked funny, maybe because the girls wear there pants pretty tight. It looked like they were wearing leotards. Red socks would have made it look much better.

Very daring of Teebz to go to a Uni Watch event wearing the Islanders’ classically-bad “Fishstick” jersey. What did Paul say to you when you walked in wearing that thing? At least you didn’t wear purple…

You might want to check out the Brewers.com store, they may have some Cerveceros stuff there.

Hey lets hope the Mets wear their FUGLY all blue caps tomorrow so they can get waxed by the Brewers again!!! GO BREW CREW!!!

I was at the Padres game last night and the best part about the whole night was the Jumbotron. Each player had 70’s era hair and facial hair. Pujols with his Jheri Curl or Mike Cameron with his fro were the highlights. Can anyone find any pictures?

I’d go with Hurling…because it sounds cool. And I like yellow.

Meanwhile I’ll be at work wearing a navy blue Under Armour polo with a decent-size UA planted on the chest. Paul would be disappointed. I’ll see if I can grab a photo on my phone to share.

I am sure a lot of us will be talking about the pink bats that will be used for Mother’s Day tomorrow by numerous players…but… What about the pink armbands that were worn last year? Other than link last year, did anyone else wear the pink armband???

..There were some Cerveceros jerseys@Miller Park about 2-3 weeks ago in their “Hot corner” team shop, but, they were all size 40, I think.

Just turned on Fox Soccer Channel and it’s giving the U.S. Women’s National Team vs Canada and the U.S. are wearing pink jerseys.

Regarding the St. Louis throwbacks, check out the tailfeathers on the cardinals on the bat between the 2007 & 1972 versions you provided.
    Subtile, but there’s the difference!

It was an honor meeting everyone last night. I was wearing my CSC cycling jersey last night.

Besides Teebz’ fishsticks Islanders sweater (Darius Kasperitis game worn), other uni’s represented:

    Giants (Eli Manning)
    Soviet Red Army
    North Dakota hockey
U of Minnesota 60’s era throwback hockey
    Clint Boyer (Nascar #07) crew

If you visit Minneapolis, a trip to Nye’s to hear Ruth Adams and the Worlds Most Dangerous Polka Band is a must see.

Hey to everyone who made it to Nye’s last night and thanks for the good conversations. I can’t believe Teebz made the drive all the way from Winnipeg!

I’m glad to see that the Golden Gopher throwback jersey was in attendance.

Nye’s is a place unto itself. I still have polka music ringing in my ears…

i don’t know why people dont like the fisherman isles sweaters i like them the colors are a bit… 90’s but we could of perfected them. its certainly better then the orange ones… what a mess those are.

I’m watching the Royals/White Sox game right now. KC is wearing jerseys with “Kansas City” written in script across the front. Like most of America, I don’t pay alot of attention to the Royals, but I always thought they had Royals across the front. Is this an alternate or complete uni change?
i don’t know why people dont like the fisherman isles sweaters i like them the colors are a bit… 90’s but we could of perfected them. its certainly better then the orange ones… what a mess those are.
personally, the first time I saw the islanders logo (the old/new) I thought it was the ugliest thing I have ever seen. Like what are they trapped in the past or something? They is little to no imagination to it all. And to go back that logo was just dumb to me. Just because people didn’t like the gordan’s fisherman logo(I liked it, it had imagination to it) doesn’t mean you go back to the dated logo. They should’ve just went back to the drawing board. I hope the islanders change they logo when the league changes uniforms next year. Something with a lighthouse that looks like an ‘i” or something.

The Royals have gone to the Kansas City script road uniforms for a couple years now. Great classic look. I think they had it in their first year. Eventually, they went with a block letter Kansas City, then slipped into Royals script both home and away. I like this look. It can be improved only by going powder blue. Too bad they booted the ballgame.

I took pictures of every single one of the doctored photos on the scoreboard. They did it last year too, so I knew to bring my camera tonight. They will eventually be on my flickr: link. I’m having major connectivity problems at the moment, so my uploading is severely slowed down.

Whoops, the hyperlink above picked up the period I used to close the sentence. Either remove it when the page opens, or use this:

Oh God no. Those red-billed caps were hideous. Black and red touching = horrible clashing.

Besides, it looks bad when cap colors don’t match undershirts when vests are being worn.

    EDIT:

However, I remember somebody posted a design for a black-vested, yellow-sleeved Pirates alternate with the black caps and yellow brims that looked fantastic.

When you say I look like my name, I think you mean because I’m wearing all black and because I look somewhat loud–like my comments.

Adam in Chicago, I know I am too late, but I hope you wore the hurling jersey.

Jeff B., Teebz was wearing a Cleveland cap.

Thanks all for the nice comments, y’all. If there’s ever a Uni-Watch Party in your area, make sure to attend.

I was watching the Omaha news tonight, and they were showing highlights from the state baseball tournament and Omaha Westside was playing and I almost had a seziure: Westside wears solid red (red hat, red jersey, and red pants) unis. Thank God I can’t find any pictures.

I agree, the blue jackets were a real bad idea. It was a colder than normal evening in San Diego though. No excuse for the clashing though.

All the scoreboard photos of the players with funny hair are uploaded on my flickr now (link in one of my posts above)

Wow. All I can say is wow. What an evening. I didn’t get home until 11pm, and then I find I made front-page Uni Watch news? WOW! :o)

Ok, first off… Paul, spectacular event in its entirety. The stories and laughter shared at the back table at Nye’s will stick with me forever. Thanks for making it out to the midwest, even though I forgot to buy you the first round as I had promised. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you, and really appreciate the invite you sent me. I can’t say “thank you” enough.

To everyone else, thanks for making a lone Canuck feel overly welcome in a foreign land. You all deserve a pat on the back and a pint. I will honestly cherish that night in my memories, especially having you all laugh when I said I have to plug my car in during the winter so it doesn’t freeze solid. Too funny. Also, great exhibitions of jerseys to all who wore one, and to Minna for representing the black uniform in all of us. :o)

Ok, to the comments: Yes, the hat that I was wearing was a Cleveland Indians hat from the 1959 Indians era. I bought it with the idea of getting the “Da Bears” comments (which have come in spades). However, it was worn for Vince as he couldn’t be there for the event. Just representing the other Uni Watch top dog (it’s the only Cleveland thing I own).

The Kasparaitis jersey is not a game-worn, despite my efforts in trying to get one. However, it sure got me a ton of looks going to and from the event, as well as my arrival at the event. The bartenders in the restaurant simply waved me back once they saw what I was wearing. I had to bring some New York to the table if I was representing Vinnie in order to make Paul feel a little more at home. That, and I love the Fisherman jersey. :o)

I also wore the Eli Manning NY Giants jersey. Why? Because you can take Paul out of New York, but you can’t take New York out of Paul. That, and it was way cooler than wearing a hockey jersey. I was cooking with the Kaspy jersey on.

Lastly, I didn’t get to talk to everyone as much as I would have liked, but (sorry for the hijack, Paul) my email is on my blog if you want to get a hold of me. Fire me an email if you like.

And for those that heard my exploits of getting out of work and getting down to Minneapolis, you’ll all be happy to know that my mom got to shop like crazy today as a Mother’s Day present in Minneapolis, Albertville, Fargo, and Grand Forks. I even paid the duty for her overspending. ;o)

Happy Mother’s Day, mom, and to all of your moms too!
Alright fellow UniWatchers, I can’t decide: should I wear link to tonight’s Chicago bash, or my link?
Another fellow hurler, eh? Did you make it Philly last year? If so, I played against you! link

You headed to nationals this year?

Slowly but surely sanitary and stirrup socks are making a comeback in college softball. Here’s a pic of a link and here’s link Notice the link in that pic

Minna, for the record, I noticed the earrings :)

My inlaw pennance is complete, now i can relax with a family picnic this afternoon followed by the Pink Bat Extravaganza at the Dome tonight. I’ll be the guy in the blue Santana jersey behind home plate next to the guy trying to get arrested for passing Breathe-Right strips to Justin Morneau. Go Boof.
